Next Generation Input for VR Controllers

Cirque continues to push the envelope in human machine interaction by exploring new ways for people to interact in virtual reality with the VR Grip™ platform.

Cirque’s VR Grip solution can turn a virtual reality controller, joystick or game controller into a fully touch sensitive surface. In addition to tracking a users hand and fingers on the controller surface, proximity sensing also tracks finger position in the open space above the controller surface. This provides functionality similar to a glove tracking system, while maintaining the direct tactile feedback and trigger control of a controller. Unique custom flexible sensors allow this solution to fit into almost any industrial design.

Cirque’s architecture uses one touch controller chip to power both the VR Grip proximity sensor and a traditional trackpad. The trackpad portion is perfect for a round thumb sensor, and also features proximity sensing of the thumb above the surface.

This one-chip architecture provides a feature-rich solution for enabling next generation input devices.

Flexible Development Platform

VR Grip Development Kit

Cirque offers a full featured development platform to speed integration of the VR Grip platform into your designs. This includes:

  • Reference VR Grip controller hardware that provides a simple example design and a platform for initial evaluation.

  • Documentation package with a sample application for getting data from the hardware (source code provided) and details on how to implement the VR Grip platform in your microprocessor environment.

Proximity sensing zones detect the presence of fingers on, or above the surface of the controller. The round, curved thumb trackpad also features proximity sensing.
