GlidePoint® Touchpad Overview

For more than a decade, Cirque’s original GlidePoint® technology has been leading the capacitive touchpad industry. With applications in multiple products and an ever-growing number of markets, GlidePoint® is currently found in laptops, keyboards, PDAs and countless other computing devices throughout the world. It enables complete navigational control of any graphical interface, packed in a space-saving, low-friction and extremely durable touchpad.

The new GlidePoint Gen 4 platform offers native advanced multi-touch gestures and built in palm rejection technology without a driver. In addition, five independent touch points are reported enabling custom gesture development.

Based upon a mutual balanced capacitance design, the touchpad is mounted onto a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) where the user’s finger glides. Below the electrically insulating surface lies a sophisticated sensor system that responds to the most precise finger movements. This allows for a wide range of capacitance while also providing the ability to detect small imbalances.

GlidePoint® sensor dimensions can vary greatly. At any size, it maintains excellent resolution and tracking capability, thereby providing unparalleled flexibility in product designs. Additionally, GlidePoint® technology detects grounded and ungrounded objects and distinguishes between the two types because of the balanced capacitive method. This eliminates interference between the user and the interface, providing for more accurate tracking.

GlidePoint® not only adds to the form and function of its applications, but improves the user experience too. Ergonomically designed and simple to operate, the maintenance-free GlidePoint® touchpad can also be custom configured with a power-saving “idle mode,” tap and corner-tap functionality, vertical scroll and more. In addition, software is available that allows OEMs to enable, disable or personalize advanced settings and/or reprogram the touch sensitive area.
